DFG

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is the central self-governing organization of science in Germany. It serves science in all its branches by funding research projects at universities and other research institutions. The DFG promotes scientific excellence and quality by selecting the best projects in a competitive environment and provides impetus for international scientific cooperation. It pays particular attention to young researchers and equal opportunities for male and female researchers. It also advises parliaments and authorities on scientific issues.

In organizational terms, the DFG is an association under private law. Its members are German universities, non-university research institutions, scientific associations and the academies of sciences and humanities. The DFG receives funding for the fulfilment of its tasks, mainly from the federal government (69 %) and the states (30 %), but also from EU funds and private grants. The DFG supports the DKN with a scientific secretariat. A representative from the DFG head office represents the DFG at the DKN as an ex-officio member.
